Physical Healing

Question: I know there must be a relationship between good physical health and true spiritual principles, but what part does Truth play when it comes to our healing?

Answer: Everything is in levels. When it comes to our bodies, healthful and true dietary and physical regimens are important. But the real issue rests with invisible forces operating beneath or beyond the physical. No body can be any healthier than the energy it conducts and embraces. In the long run, real health is a question of relationship. Our task is to wake up to those unhealthy inner relationships we presently are involved in so that in discovery of them they can be replaced with higher and more balanced elements. Healing naturally follows each new healthy step that we'll take in this manner. And incidentally, healing is in scale -- not only as it concerns our physical well-being, but our spiritual nature as well. There is no end to God's health!

Question: When I am in physical pain and not in control of what my body is doing, is there a tip you can give me for easing the seemingly inevitable anxiety?

Answer: In one sense, everything about this life is a kind of preparation for death. This death that is inevitable physically is one indicator that we should be using its long shadow to find ways to stand in the Light. As strange as it seems, it is this fear or resistance to our own physical end that perpetuates our painful relationship with it. It is hard to understand, but if we will not run from this fear, but rather become intimate with it, we will grow so tired of being afraid that we will die to the fear. Dying to this fear is the real beginning of dying to death. This is something you cannot have explained to you, but rather it is a bold inner requirement we are all given the opportunity to realize. If we will refuse to run from the battle we face, whatever it may be, victory appears!

Question: I am always so impressed with people who are able to overcome their physical impairments with grace and a positive outlook. How can we transform our physical pains into spiritual gain?

Answer: Until you change what you do with your pain, you cannot be healed. Suffering is a kind of seed that holds the capacity to deliver us from darkness or confirm our suffering. Our usual response to pain tells us what we need to do to get past it. The only thing we can change about our lives is what we hold to be true… we can't change anything else. We suffer because of what we "know" is true; our sense of self stands upon the ideas we are identified with. God gives us the will to choose what we want. What's not up to us is everything that leads up to the moment of choice. Pain is the passage that can lead to revelation, to a brand new understanding and identity.
