A man lost and wandering in the desert, who imagines he is on the beach of some 5-Star Resort Hotel...and headed to the pool where a cool drink awaits him, is quite literally a "goner." He has no awareness of his actual circumstance and, as such, cannot possibly choose (let alone act) as he should to save his own life.

The spiritually asleep human being is in a very similar situation. He or she imagines a "tomorrow" where, through equally imagined powers, they will finally change their lives for the better; fear and worry will be washed away with the arrival of whatever; anger and resentment will melt into kindness and love as they evolve into the person they imagine they should be. And these dreams go on and on and on...with nothing changing except those circumstances under which that dreamer is once again rudely awakened to the reality of his or her situation. And then, back to sleep they go...knowing of no other way to deal with the stream of disturbing moments that mar their "peace."

This description of the current state of human consciousness is understated and will stand "as is" for individuals until that one-in-million person sees the truth of his or her shocking situation. He has believed in a lie passed down through the centuries: not only is he free to be and do as he wills, but that with his will he will rescue himself from the negative effects of all that he has willed into place to date. But perhaps comes the day when this lie, and the unconscious, mechanical level self that supports it, can no longer be accepted. There's just too much evidence to the contrary. So what happens then?

Of course, you must find this out for yourself but, to answer your question, this person has to let go of every pleasing idea he has of himself, including his hope in a time to come when everything will work out in his favor because "he is basically not a bad sort of fellow." It is only there and then that he is given a glimpse of something that cannot be seen otherwise, because he needed "new eyes" to see it:

He is not who he mistook himself to be; she is nothing like anything she could have imagined had she a thousand years to dream. And with this dawning insight dawns also the realization that he could have never known what to will for himself, because any former act of will on his part was part of the whole illusion of a separate self. So it isn't so much that he surrenders his will to God, as it is that he sees he never had one of his own in the first place. And this awakening is the beginning of his relationship with the real will of God, with his alignment with an intelligence that is just, merciful, compassionate and loving...without ever "taking thought" as to "how" to be these divine qualities. He becomes truly watchful instead of being (untruly) willful. And, (finally) to the point -- as seemingly paradoxical as it may be:

None of this could have happened had this person not discovered that he was born into this world "hard-wired" to be set against himself and all that he (secretly, soulfully) longs for.
