The chief cause of any psychological fear is a false belief that life can throw something at us greater than our ability to outgrow both that unwanted moment... and the lower level of self that fears it. We are betrayed by this belief only because we have yet to awaken to this Truth that sets us free: Within each of us lives -- no matter what our culture, tradition, or religious background -- an original fearless Self: a transcendent nature that no more fears unforeseen changes than does the sun shake in the presence of a passing shadow cast by its own light.

Exercise
"I am not this weakness that I fear." When you experience the constriction of impatience, anger, resentment, the fear of being alone, or any other negative state -- feel that something is not quite right. See how you habitually identify with a particular painful event or problem related to the past, and catch those moments where you feel the need to protect yourself from something that seems to be bigger than you. Instead of agreeing with what that fearful state says is true, the exercise is to remember the truth that "I am not this weakness that I fear." The onset of psychological fear is natural, but being chained by it is unnatural and unnecessary. By stepping into the light of awareness and refusing to be the instrument of fear you begin the process of separating from that fearful nature.
