Don't Look Back. When you feel a disturbance, your first action is to observe the reaction. The observation produces the necessary separation so you can recognize that something wants to pull you into the state. Learn how to recognize these thoughts and feelings that want you to turn around and wander into the town of "What Was." See what your favorite thing to look back on is, and then work to depersonalize the moment by knowing that unless you stay where you are in the present, you will be taken over by that state. You won't be free of the pain, but you are free to be conscious of the pain. The pain will gradually fade away if you don't look back.
