Each year around the time of the summer solstice, a group of inner-life students gathers at Life of Learning to immerse ourselves in this wonderful School for Self-Discovery and move further along on our individual journeys to higher fulfillment.

This year Guy’s talks will focus on the process of self-transformation. There couldn’t be a more important topic. At its core, this is what the work is all about. Self-transformation is at the heart of every great philosophy and spiritual teaching.

We’re born undeveloped, physically and spiritually. The purpose of our lives is to be perfected. In truth, that’s the purpose of everything. But while most of life’s creations are perfected for Nature’s purposes, to become more efficient at surviving at their existing level, humans have the potential to be perfected upward into a new and higher level of life – a transformation into a new order of being.

I think all of us sense the need to become something greater than we are. For example, we all know we could be better people. We would like to stop hurting ourselves and others with our anger, pettiness, impatience, and judgment. Every true religion and philosophy offers a path to becoming our better selves.

For those of us who have taken on this kind of inner work, maybe for many years (and often without seeing too much progress!), what we feel called to do can sometimes seem almost impossible. But Guy offers encouraging wisdom about our power to change. He tells us:

        “Nothing in reality is fixed. The illusion of some unwanted, unchanging nature within you is the work of unconscious resistance to the ceaseless transformation that is the matrix of Real Life.”

Imagine what that means. Our potential for transformation is inherent in the fabric of life itself. It is not impossible for us to enter that higher level of being. We are made to enter into the “never-ending flame of self-transformation” and be forged into our own higher selves.

But for that to happen we must learn to see through and become free of the lower nature that has no interest in our changing because to change would mean the end of it.

And that’s what makes this upcoming talk series so exciting. Guy will help us remove the veils that cover our eyes that we might see, for ourselves, how the same resistance to making real changes in our lives holds within it all that we need to be self-realized and raised into the Divine life that is our birthright.

Learn the Secrets of the True Alchemy

Centuries ago people spoke of alchemy – the science of turning base metal into gold. While the unenlightened took this as a literal physical transmutation, the wise knew that it was all a metaphor. In dark times it was dangerous to go against the accepted orthodoxy, and so those who sought self-knowledge and transformation used a kind of code. Base metal stood for the undeveloped soul, and gold was code for the transformed nature: pure and of a value beyond our reckoning.

The transformation from one state to the other was often seen as a magical process. But the true alchemy is not magical (although in a way it is if you see magic as involving forces beyond a human being’s capability). The aspirant is required to do a special kind of inner work involving self-observation, self-awareness, self-abnegation, and humility. And it can take years to see that work flower. But there are also great rewards all along the way. And if we are fortunate, we can have the guidance of someone who has gone before us and can help us avoid the pitfalls and keep to the true path.
