Question:

One of your "key lessons" says: "Don't be the least concerned if you can't seem to find the time -- or the energy -- to get going because of life's seemingly endless "duties" to family or friends. Drop these punishing (and false) ideas." Do you suggest ignoring responsibility and family... or the way one thinks about such responsibilities? (From student correspondence)

Answer:

We need to re-evaluate what our true responsibility is in this life of ours. Certainly no one in his or her right mind would advocate abandoning one's natural and necessary householder responsibilities. This key lesson, taken out of context, would (as you suggest) be highly irresponsible. The intended message here is rather that love will always find a way -- that it has its own source of energy far and away above that of one's will to succeed according to prevailing social standards. And, most important of all, that our love of something -- whatever that may be that "calls" to us -- will "find" all the time and energy it needs to grow IF we will just give it even the smallest amount of dedicated attention... in spite of the way we often feel that we can't because of "family and duty," etc.
