Question:

You've written that: "No one ever falls into a dark psychological hole that he didn't help dig!" I see what you're trying to say, but I think that statement is rather offensive to survivors of child abuse, violence, etc. (From student correspondence)

Answer:

No one is saying that those of us who have been abused in some way chose to be subjected to that insidious kind of violence. There is no doubt that this world of ours is populated by monsters in human disguises; it's a fact that, too long ignored, actually contributes to the base suffering of all who are human. But, here's the point: the victim of abuse has a choice to either linger in the psychological past, to resist and thus remain in the wreckage of damages done to their heart and mind, or to start over and do the interior work to dig out of the darkness of his or her own past. What was is only as powerful as we make it what is.
