Far better to see ourselves lacking the strength we need to be kind -- and to consciously suffer the humiliation of seeing we are without (that) character -- than it is to act out the unkindness of an unconscious nature that always finds fault with others in order to hide its inherent weakness.

We're always trying to overcome the giants of our lives -- addiction, fear, ambition -- these creatures in our consciousness that we've mistaken ourselves to be. We try to overcome them ourselves with what we know. But our job is not to overcome them, but to go into the battle and meet them. That is what is meant to bear the burden of our cross. "It doesn't matter" whether we win or not. What matters first is the good and the good is to deny ourselves, "pick up our cross," and allow the moment to do what it is meant to do, which is to reconcile heaven and earth, to allow what IS to reconcile what WAS so that something new can be born.
