The strength of your resistance to any unwanted moment proves the extent to which you have unknowingly agreed to enclose yourself in a pattern of unconscious expectations with people, places, and possessions.

This is an unseen agreement whose bittersweet "reward" is that familiar, but false sense of comfort -- born of a thousand unchallenged repetitions -- where your expectations run merrily along, unopposed by life.

But always comes along, and always when least expected, some unwanted moment that not only reveals this pattern, but also the prison hidden within it. A great struggle ensues.

Looking away from this pain, seeking to console yourself, or grieving over the sense of some loss -- due to some smashed expectation -- each and all...are part of the pattern, and serve to secretly support its continuation. All expectations are unseen attachments. This explains, in part, why attachment -- to anyone, any image, anything -- is a prison.
