There is no such thing as a compulsive pleasure, let alone a contented "slave" that lives under its lash; and yet billions of human beings serve some form of addiction, willing to turn a blind eye to how much they suffer for the sake of a pleasure they cannot keep, a security that cannot be possessed.

Sell all and follow me. Identify one thing you are addicted to: depression, anxiety, greed, shame, avoiding things, etc. Try to notice that the onset of any sudden painful resistance is evidence of a hidden addiction. And with everything you have, make the intention to not feed it... not to set yourself against it, but to see there is something in you that wants to feed it. Practice coming to a stop in the moment you feel the temptation to complete yourself through that all too familiar pleasure. Be present to the consciousness that produces the temptation. The task is to explore that consciousness, not to change the condition that is blamed for the pain. The path to freedom is seeing into that consciousness, not searching outside of it, seeking a way to reconcile it.
