See and outgrow your familiar sense of self. We presently try to overcome what we don't want to see about ourselves by resisting what we see. In so doing, we are actually forging the chains that keep us bound to the same sense of self, along with the same experiences that we say we don't want. As human beings, we have the possibility of experiencing another order of consciousness. To do so, we must first see and then outgrow this lower level of consciousness. The task is to learn as much about this consciousness as you can, which includes being aware of the resistance. The exercise is to write down on a piece of paper a one or two-word description of a state, character or quality that you see in yourself that you have been trying to overcome for a long time, such as impatience, worrying, laziness, fear of the future, etc. Keep that piece of paper with you, and then at least once each day, look at what you wrote and see that giving it your attention produces an experience related to the memory of that unwanted state. Then as best you can, instead of just identifying with the familiar automatic reaction, be aware of the consciousness that is resisting the state AND the state that is being resisted at the same time. This is a completely different order of awareness of yourself that results in a completely new experience.
