The principle longing we have as human beings is to be ourselves. But this essential longing is always interfered with by something. Here is the essence of the problem: you can never be yourself and protect yourself at the same time. Why?
Personality has two principle functions: procurement, which is getting what I desire, and protection, which involves keeping things away from me that threaten what I have accumulated through procurement. The two go hand in hand; you cannot have procurement without also having protection.
Can a human being resist a moment and learn from the moment at the same time? No, it is impossible. Can we resist a moment and grow at the same time. No, that is also impossible. When we resist a moment, the only thing that grows is the personality that seeks to procure and protect. In real life, we are not meant to protect ourselves.
Events are meant to develop our essential character. To be yourself means to understand that God has created a world that is intended to always be acting upon you for the development of the entirety of human consciousness. And that consciousness is one thing, and not divided as personality perceives it.
What is truly valuable is not to protect yourself, but to subject yourself to what wants to perfect you. That is quite a difference because you have now agreed to be yourself, which is what God put you here to be. And this Intelligence sees to it that you are never given more than you can take in any given moment. Everything in the life is meant for you to find yourself through. So work at being true to yourself instead of being the servant of personality.
