All of tomorrow's worries lie hidden in a moment of imagining -- and then identifying with -- some fearful thought as it threatens you with the possibility of a painful moment that may, or may not come to pass.

Summary

We don't suspect that we are packed full of beliefs about ourselves and about life. We don't suspect that the root of whatever it is that causes us to feel sad, unhappy, to have no fun, is false beliefs that produce a false sense of self through false responsibilities. All false responsibilities have their root in a false belief.

Number three of the Eight Great False Responsibilities of Life is born of the false belief that unless we worry about our tomorrows, they're not going to turn out right.

How many of you feel pretty comfortable carrying the whole world on your shoulders, being responsible for whatever it is that happens, wherever it happens? Can you see that this is a false belief? Christ himself said, "Take no thought for tomorrow." This false belief is at work when I'm worried about "tomorrow." I'm worried about what I'm going to say to my employer, to my friends; I'm worried about my children or worried about what's going to happen when I get that piece of mail I've been expecting; I'm worried about what will happen fifteen years from now if this or that doesn't happen.

You cannot make tomorrow into anything brighter or better than your potential to be present to yourself in the moment, present to the fears that are trying to convince you to take actions about tomorrow.

If you plant a fear seed you grow a fear tree. Our worries about our tomorrows have nothing whatsoever to do with the way we excuse ourselves for them. You can be absolutely the most passionate man or woman in the world about your tomorrow. You could have the greatest expectations in the universe for success and excellence in the moment to come, and that wish, that longing, that natural aptitude we have to want to be excellent beings has nothing whatsoever to do with the tomorrows that we envision -- that tomorrow where something has gone wrong and that's why we have to protect ourselves in the present moment.

Real excellence in a human being never protects itself; it's always fulfilling its own potential by catching the fear that would drive it to what it calls perfection.

Any person who punishes themselves out of the belief that "everything that isn't planned for tomorrow is a punishment for me" is living with a false responsibility. The true responsibility is to be actively present. A man or woman learns to be passionate about the moment because they're present to it. They're patient in the moment and they recognize that the moment is the seed. Tomorrow is not what matters. What matters is my attention to where I am and what I am and what's moving through me right now.
