Part I: True gratitude is the only water that can douse the flames of desire.
Part II: One's pleasures do not necessarily hold feelings of gratitude, but being grateful is always a pleasure.
Human beings live under the tyranny of "what is being withheld from them." It is part of our day to day consideration. There once was a angry, unhappy young prince. He was traveling with his minister of Malcontent. They stopped at a tavern and they cleared away the paupers and made a special table for the prince. The prince was generally unhappy with everything. His cup was half-empty, he notice a pauper who was having a great time at another table. He had the pauper fetched and asked him why his cup was full and the prince's cup was always half emptied. The pauper told him, "Because your eyes see only what you don't have, your cup is always half empty, your tongue tastes only what is not to your liking. "Because you always see what is not, nothing that you have in your life is every enough."
The only nature that sees and reacts to "what is not" is the self whose nature identifies with what is not. What it doesn't see is what it suffers not. It identifies with what isn't there. We see something (what we wish we had) even though it's not there. We don't hold what we have we hold what we don't have. If what is not, is not real then the self that sees it is also not real. It is imagination, illusion and deception. What sees is only a memory, expectation that tortures you over what is absent. What is it that doesn't want?
Matt 19 Lay not up treasures on earth but in heaven. Where your treasure is, your heart is. Can't serve 2 masters... So how does a person lay up treasures in heaven? The light of the body is the eye. The eye was made to serve the Light. Light created the body of the eye. Eye is created for the principle. When thy eye is single the whole body will be whole. We are made to be the receiver of what the eye sees. If they eye be evil the whole body will be filled with darkness. The body of the eye is made by something divided and this nature sees what is not.
Galib "The wise hear what is, the mad will hear what is not. Only a cracked mirror will show the difference." We see more what is not. Nothing is right because we see everything as what is not. Is it possible for a human being to not live under the tyranny of what is not? There are 2 natures. One made from light and one that is from darkness. It is possible to have gratitude in our hearts all the time. Lessons are waiting for us. Life is an eternal now. We feed the nature that is not. Life's events serve these lessons because inside of them is a truth. A truth that comes brings wholeness and relieves pain. It takes a divided eye and causes what was apart to come together and there is wholeness, which is happiness. The world is miserable because nothing is enough here.
How do we become people who have gratitude for everything? Psalm 23 - The Lord is my shepherd. I shall not want. Everything we need is provided and we don't need anything else. Fear no evil thou art with me, they rod and thy staff will comfort me. The staff gently guides us; the rod is the correction. The pain is a slap when we have gone wrong. Prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. Even as I am being corrected I believe the correction is my enemy. Thy anoint my head and my cup runs over. Everything that happens in this life is given to us so we learn something, even the scowl of another. All lessons are brought to us to remold and shape us. The complaining nature can never be happy.
The deceivers prayer is - give me everything I want, don't take from me what I believe is valuable, smooth the bumps out of my life.
Real prayer is - Please God increase my capacity to see what I have been given and it is all I need. See inside myself the dissatisfaction with my perfect life. Don't let me be the sower of seeds of discontentment. Take away my dark states that call themselves the light. Stop giving myself to the minister of malcontent that can never find happiness. Find the part that speaks in the conspiracy and shut it off. God has given you a life of being a human being. Stop letting the Minister of Malcontent steal your life.
