It is a big mistake to believe that the operation of imagination requires you to be present in order for it to produce either the illusion of a pleasure or pain to come, along with some temporary corresponding sense of self; in fact, quite the opposite is true. Almost our entire present sense of "I" is thus created and -- as the offspring of a lower level of being -- is largely responsible for all human sorrow.

"Be An Innocent Observer"
Unwanted moments always reveal what we are identified with. We can never be innocent if we are identified with anything because there will always be a "motive" or "something to protect". This can only trap us in the world of opposites: always resisting what challenges what we want.
Work to see the opposites without identifying with either one. Be an innocent observer: working to see both opposites at the same time as a conscious observer. Physical tension is a product of identification. Becoming aware of it and releasing it in an unwanted moment is an act of innocence, and a step out of the circle of suffering.
