We are on a journey in which we work to get the things we want, but ultimately they don't satisfy us and we end up feeling the journey will never end. The world we currently live in is not real life itself but our thoughts about the world we pass through. But there's another world, and we hope for that world because it comforts us in this world that we currently feel ourselves to be a captive of.
The world of thought has its own kingdom and seasons. Spring represents our youth and planting seeds, Summer brings the harvest of the seeds we planted in Spring, Fall finds us wanting to wind down, relax, and enjoy the harvest, and Winter brings discontent and emptiness as we reflect back on the Spring/Summer/Fall of our lives. And this cycle can happen in a moment or in an entire lifetime.
Winter holds the seed of Spring, which will come according to our thoughts about who and what we think we will become. In our lives we move from one pre-determined world to another, such as from grade school to high school to college to the "real world." Nothing in any of these worlds is new, it's all pre-concluded by society. We get moved along by the pre-set desires of these worlds, which are accompanied by sensations derived from our thoughts about what we'll be like in the next world.
Every day we have to figure out ways to protect ourselves from the life we just created for ourselves. But if we are to ever find real Life, then at the moment where we find ourselves in a disturbance we must leave the world of thought. When we stand at the edge of the world of thought we only see darkness because everything beyond thought is unknown. We fear the unknown, so we turn around back to thought to "save" us from the emptiness. We don't understand that the emptiness is a space between thought and spirit. Pain doesn't come from the emptiness, it comes from thought knowing it has reached its own limitations.
Thought only gives us choices that are based on the known, pre-determined world, which isn't really a choice. Real choice is to choose not to let thought choose, since the only problem with life is that it doesn't match up with thought's ideas about the form that was supposed to be taken. The life of spirit is always giving the new moment to us but we don't know how to receive it because we only know what thought hands to us from its own content. So when one is truly at the end of the world of thought it seems dark, because thought has no eyes in the world of spirit and knows nothing about what is timeless. When you step into the world of spirit uncertainty follows and faith must take over.
