Negative reactions have no awareness of themselves at all, which means not only are they blind, but neither have they any awareness of how they are complicit in the continuation of the pain inherent in the condition they protest.

Summary

Our present experience of life, its happiness or sorrow, is nothing more or less than what certain unconscious parts of us tell us it is. Before we can hope to change our life experience, we must stop trying to re-write the Book of Life and work instead to awaken ourselves from the dreams of the unseen storyteller within us.

  • Better to see where we have been blind in this life - toward others and about ourselves - than never to see at all; otherwise, we'll just go on blaming whatever walls we walk into for getting in our way!
  • Not wanting events to unfold as they do often feels like a measure of control over unwanted moments, but any negative reaction to reality is only an unseen form of self-punishment and not the rescuing power we mistake it to be. The only thing our resistance to life adds to us is the weight of a self-induced suffering born of a needless worry.
  • True strength of character is not just calculated by how well we manage to carry some sizable load under challenging conditions, but is perhaps better measured by our ability to remain kind and light-spirited, even when we're sure that we can't bear the weight of one more ounce of life.
  • Work consciously to deliberately drop the names of your pains and you will also learn to let go of all the reasons you have for experiencing them.
  • Every moment that unfolds in life presents us with an invitation to choose either the path of what will better us -- as when we choose conscious kindness over unthinking cruelty -- or a path that will make us more bitter -- as when we unconsciously embrace a resentment instead of working to release it. To be wise is to choose in favor of the "better path" -- even though the bitter one often seems easier.

It isn't until the ground drops out from beneath us for the hundredth time that we suddenly realize falling down is not our only option. Faintly, but surely, if we will listen, another law in our own nature calls us to realize its power: we can catch, suspend, and drop our own weighted reactions. And so it goes that we slowly learn to take wing.
