Whenever we talk to ourselves, we are actually identifying with a conversation that is going on between two sides of a conflicted consciousness, each side unknown to the other. The only way this division can be sustained is by lying, which makes honesty an essential part of our development. The exercise is to catch yourself talking to yourself and detect both the lie that the consciousness is telling itself and the image it creates. Try to uncover all the ways in which you lie to yourself and to others, and the reasons why you do it.
