Awakening to the presence of some weak, or otherwise painful character at large within us marks the beginning of the end of its command over us.
Part 2
The longer one is able to observe oneself -- all parts of oneself, unadorned -- the less interest one has in being identified with any of these (separate) parts while, at the same time, the more willingly does one commit to do the inner work it takes to witness them.
"Separate, Illuminate, Consolidate"
We become the instruments of any passing state that we are not active observers of. Self-observation is the first great law of spiritual development. Without self observation, there is only imagination.
When you feel the appearance of a negative state, practice as best you can these 3 steps of self-observation: Separate: Reclaim your attention and become the observer of the situation in yourself, not its expression. Illuminate: Stay as fully as you can in that moment of observation. Don't talk about what you're seeing. Consolidate: See the state. Feel the state. Become aware that the "I" in pain is not you.
