What a person really wants is something of their own, something they can always have and no one can take from them, something that can touch their heart because it has been given to them, something that is not in time. All a person has right now can be taken from them at any moment because all they have has been given to them by themselves.
There are two paths. The first path is where one tries to perfect themselves, attending only to their desires. And the second path allows Life to perfect them. One leads to punishment and the other to transformation. Nature evolves by the survival of the fittest. Psychologically we are always trying to find a way to be superior and more powerful than others. Psychological evolution is the resistance of the content of ourselves. What we don't want is the path we take to get what we want. Divide to overcome only furthers the act of violence.
There was a wise father who gave his young daughter a playhouse. One day he found that she was unhappy and when asked why, she said her friends all wanted to sit at the head of the table. He takes her back to the playhouse and shows her there is a secret room inside. He gives her the following instructions. When you are in this room you can see out but no one can see in. You are the only one allowed in it. It will only open when you come by yourself. You can't bring anything into it. This is the House of Peace. Outside is the House of process where impressions, dreams, desires and all the commotion of the world. This is a place of your own.
This place of our own lives inside of us. It is not a place or a thing; it is a quality. We have to stop thinking about where we went wrong. The new way to be is right here right now. We need to move from a psychological ideal to a spiritual identity. If a boy wants to be a veterinarian the love of his ideal takes him through stages and relationships until his idea is integrated and he becomes an expression of what he wished for. Love produces excellence.
Whatever we are given by life we can remember that we want the house of peace. We have to begin to be aware of ourselves as we are. If we are asleep something is working against us all the time. Whenever we awake and remember ourselves don't refuse the awareness of the fact of what we are. The work is to remain aware of the fact we have nothing of our own. Then something new will give us what we haven't been able to give to ourselves.
