Catch yourself making something out of nothing. The chief source of our psychological suffering is we are led by a nature within us that is always looking to "make something out of nothing." CSTA-AP-ATTSM (Sista - ap - a - tism): "Can't Stop Thinking About a Problem And Then Thinking Some More". The more problems this nature can identify and think about, the more real it seems to be. And so we get lost in interior dialogues that we think are about "our lives." But they are not. All they do is keep inflated a self that isn't real.
There can be no negative thoughts without a "someone" thinking them. Catch yourself in an interior dialogue "making something out of nothing" and work to drop it. Say inwardly "I'm not interested in what you want to talk about." Outgrow the habit of being dragged into another "conversation" that simply winds up with you being swallowed by an unconscious nature that's making what isn't real, feel real. Remember "It ain't me, babe."
In order to catch this nature, you must first suspect its presence within you. And before you start suspecting it, you have to get weary of suffering all the time over trying to "make something out of nothing." The more you see the truth of this, the more interested you'll be in being present to yourself rather than being punished by what that nature says happened or may happen.
