Since you would never agree to let anyone deliberately belittle you -- or to otherwise "label you" in some disparaging way... Then why (do you) accept the presence of some negative character at large within you that can't wait -- at the drop of a hat -- to pin any kind of painful, or shameful name on you.
Until we can see that we care more for what "will be" -- even "what was" -- than we do for being in relationship with "what is" -- our heart and mind are the possessions of passing time, which means that so is the false sense of self that appears out of it... only to disappear back into it time and time again.
As long as the conduct of others dictates how you act towards them, then it's their nature that decides the role you play on the stage of life; in moments such as these, though roundly rejected as true, all that you could be is reduced... to that of being a bit character, an unwitting actor in a play not your own.
Here is the great pre-requisite to realizing the Higher Life and Love for which you long: You must uncover why you consistently allow one thing -- i.e., one unwanted event, one disparaging comment, any old regret or familiar fear to become your all... instead of meeting these passing moments with the understanding that the All is meant to be your one thing.
It often happens that in our struggle to learn and subdue the nature of our pain that our struggle itself becomes the pain that we are in. Incomplete pleasures and insatiable desires are the opposing yet complementary two wings of the thorn birds that, one moment lift the soul above the earth, and the next, drop it to dash it against the ground.
