In this question and answer dialog, Guy talks about how regret over our actions does not change anything, while genuine remorse is connected to an awareness of our actual powerlessness, which allows for real change to take place.
Following is a small excerpt from a "fireside chat" between Guy Finley and Dr. Ellen Dickstein as they explored the topic of The Power to Release Regrets and Get Over Guilt. Guy: We don't "learn" the way that we think we learn... which is by reliving things. No one learns anything by reliving a situation. Ellen: This reminds me of something you said that I found very interesting...
The past can't be forgiven because that's not where the Christ, the living Light and Love by whatever name... lives. Only atonement -- being in Presence -- can place you where you see that who you really are is not (in) the past you're ashamed of.
Guy Finley will give a free talk on The Secret of Letting Go: How to Drop Fear, Worries, and Painful Regrets at the Port Orange Regional Library, Florida. If you are in the area, please join us. Talk will also be livestreamed.
Face the Light and darkness walks behind you.
Nothing in reality is fixed; the illusion of being unable to transcend some unchanging nature within you is the work of unseen resistance to the ceaseless transformation that is the matrix of Real Life.
In this life . . . we are unable to forget whatever remains unforgiven. So, if we won't let go of some pain -- whose time has now past -- then who is to blame for the weight of this burden still being carried on our back?...

Classroom Talk: 7/28/2021 - Along the interior path, the aspirant must face what seems many separate temptations; but, in truth, there is but one. In the end, the root of temptation is the desire to see and to feel oneself as being "special"... the cost of which is to be thrown into conflict with anyone, or anything that threatens this image. Self-liberation is seeing this conflict for what it is...

One of our greatest, least understood sorrows in this life, the root cause of an uninspired life, is that -- given our present level of being -- we have no other place to explore besides the valley of thought: an unconscious realm where the shadows of things that were hide their emptiness by changing their shape to look like a time to come -- just ahead -- when, at long last, we will reach the time and place where our struggles with life are at last behind us!

Classroom Talk: 5/24/2020 - Struggling to escape the mind-breaking pain of any past regret is about as useful as hating ourselves for having fallen into a pit of quicksand... Where the more we fight to escape the hold it has over us, the deeper into it we sink.

Classroom Talk: 01/18/2026 - Most of us live an accidental life...where our actual condition is constantly covered up by the convenience of being able to regret whatever we look back on as the source of our pain. But let’s be clear. Our list of painful regrets is not due to a cruel world, bad timing, or unfortunate events that got the better of us; no, the fault lies elsewhere, much closer to home: not only are we blind to the legion of unconscious parts at large in the dark of us, but we are yet to see the other half of this same truth: these same parts never stop working to ensure that we never stop wrestling with the regrets they keep resurrecting within us. To what end, this painful plot? That we never become conscious of the relationship between a life we regret, and our identification with a lower level of consciousness that ensures its continuation.
Nothing in the universe can make you relive some painful moment from your past as long as you choose to live from the higher understanding that no old dark thought has the power to define you, let alone drag you down.
