Unconscious identification with any pain from the past -- especially as it involves, or otherwise lends support to some negative perception of oneself -- is a slow-acting poison that, once ingested, soon darkens the soul and leads to its destruction.
Awakening the power to see past the pain in our present condition is the pre-requisite to transcending it; such inner-sight is to these dark states within us as is the dawn to the night sky that cannot remain in its presence.

Real life never stops starting over; but, before we can enter into its ceaseless flow and realize its perfect freedom, we must agree to let go of our identification with any past attachments that create a present sense of self.
