Whenever we are taken over by a negative state -- and remain identified with our resistance to it -- we may not know it, but in these moments... we are as good as “dead.” Yes, it feels like we’re alive, but this powerful sense of self is really just the presence of our (own) painful resistance to what that moment came to reveal to us about our present level of self.

Learning what it means to step back from our reactions to life is the same as learning to walk past those parts of us that want us to believe our only choices in that moment are those presented to us from the content of these reactions.
The past -- whatever its pain -- only exists in the present moment as a place of suffering due to an unconscious level of self that -- on its own -- first recalls that time and place of sorrow, and then resists the torment of its own conditioned memory.
It's NEVER life's lessons themselves that are painful: the real problem, which is the same as the reason why we groan in these moments -- instead of grow from them -- is that there's something in our present level of consciousness that does NOT want that lesson!
