You can't work with what you are not, and you can't change what you hope to be. Work begins and ends in the same place: with where you are, and what you are in the moment. Any other effort is but part of a dream, as is the inevitable shock of being awakened from it.

For us, death -- even as we "learn to live" in its fearsome shadow -- seems to mark the end of all that we have known; a looming "last show" when the theatre will be closed, and the final curtain drawn. But, there is another kind of death...

Any real intention we set for ourselves to rise above our present level of being is going to reveal a lower level of self that doesn't want to change. This is a powerful spiritual law that creates both challenge and opportunity at the same time. The challenge: agreeing to see how our unconscious nature -- encased and enchanted by its own negative reactions -- is incapable of doing anything other than resisting unwanted moments.

The degree to which we judge others, and would make them pay for their shortcomings, is inseparable from the false belief that our nature is somehow different, superior to those seen through the eyes of our disdain.
