In real life there are no "tracks" to follow, but thought runs along the tracks of memory, and memory always departs from, and returns to the same station: the PAST. This explains why it seems we never arrive at that divine station in life called "True Freedom"... because real freedom is not in time.
Whoever lies... cries; and not just in that moment, but in every moment thereafter; as when, by fear, we feel compelled not just to defend some past self-compromising choice... but also because we continue to participate in an unconscious act that's not only set against our own best interests... but, ultimately, against the Good of all.
It's impossible to die to the pain of our past... as long as we remain identified with an unconscious nature that can't seem to go through a day without reliving some dark memory it then summarily resists...
There are two ways to learn about God's Life. We can either study past examples of sacrifice and humility, or we can agree to let God use us as living examples of what he wishes us to know about Himself. While the former approach may educate us, only the latter can elevate us into that Light and Life we wish to know.
The beginning of the end of any painful taunt or haunt from your past that won't let you go is to quietly ask yourself when its ache starts to surface, "Whose memory is this that now torments me?" Then silently remind yourself that no such misery belongs to you and, in your awakened state, consciously dismiss the imposter that was posing as you!...
Nothing in the universe can make you relive some painful moment from your past as long as you choose to live in a self-renewing awareness that remembers the following truth for you: no old dark thought has the power to define you, let alone drag you down.
Each time some desire-created “I” dreams of a better tomorrow to come, it “sees” that future in the THOUGHTS it weaves to dress it up. But thought -- by nature -- is of the PAST, which means that ALL of our newly imagined tomorrows... are secretly a set of secondhand clothes.
No condition, in and of itself, is ever the cause of psychological pain; suffering of this kind is inherent in the level of consciousness that resists changing conditions instead of using them to change itself!...
It is not the pain of the past that goes deeper, grows darker, becoming more intractable each time it’s revisited. Rather, this pain is the negative effect of an unconscious nature that loves to immerse itself in its own conditioned memory of that unwanted moment...
Untouched, uncorrupted by what once was, and yet unfolding from it -- as does a new blossom from its bud -- comes forth the ever-present moment. But (such) newness holds no familiar pleasure for a mind locked in time: where its struggle to be free unfolds in self-spun captivity, an unwitting but willing captive of a prison whose bars are the past carried forward.
