There is only one reason why we ever become negatively inclined, let alone surrender ourselves to the debilitating embrace of any dark character that comes calling for us: We have forgotten that within us dwells a Light whose power grants us the right to choose the kind of company we keep.

The fear of -- and unconscious resistance to seeing the depth and breadth of one's own weakness -- is not the same as realizing one's actual state of (spiritual) helplessness in that same moment.

Look closely at what a person struggles with in life; the actual nature of what he or she is fighting to possess, protect, or win. To what does he give his time, most of his attention? To what end her plans, the things she pursues and puts first each day? Such is the only real way to measure the true nature of anyone's character, including our own.

No unwanted moment exists greater than our right to walk past the dark, or otherwise fearful parts of us responsible for that painful perception... as long as we're willing to meet, face to face, the lower level of self that fears change, and then work to use its fear to die to it.

Here is an enigma wrapped in a paradox: we cannot buy the love of the Divine; no good deed can produce the Presence of what is Holy and Everlasting; a billion plaintive tears are powerless to invoke even the smallest touch of Grace; and yet, at every point along the upper path that leads us into the Light of Love's Perfection, we get only what we pay for...nothing more, nothing less.

Regardless of how we want to believe otherwise, no-matter how subtle may be our justification for the same, we can't put the cares of this world first... and expect to be cared for by a Higher World at the same time. It's a faultless Law, and none can escape its perfect justice: whatever we put second in our life... places us second in its life as well.
