The problem with pride is that this vain spirit always feels righteous in its wrongness; seeing itself as being superior to the terrible sense of isolation created by its own tormenting desire to be like no one else.

Just because we are able to freely justify, idealize, or otherwise deny the "in the dark" parts of us that frighten, torment, or otherwise bully us... does not mean that we are free.
Allowing anything to eat at you -- by consenting to sit at the "table of torment" -- serves nothing... save the dark and hungry ghost of some past pain that lives only to consume negative energy.
We think that what troubles us most in life revolves around those things we can't control, or that we're otherwise unable to possess. But, the real source of what torments us is . . . we don't possess ourselves.
