Classroom Talk: 3/23/2003 - We do not cease to exist when, having surrendered ourselves to the star-lit depth of a dark night sky, all thought subsides; or when for the invisible touch of an unsought love our heart is filled with a gentle stillness; rather it is only within moments such as these -- when we are enabled to forget about ourselves -- that it may be said we really live!

No relationship in life can be any more successful than what we are willing to learn about ourselves through it. The moment we turn our back on what others give us to see about ourselves, we not only walk away from what we need to see, but also from the better person we could be...were we only willing to learn the lesson at hand.

As long as our identity is a derivative of any temporary passion, our sense of self is a by-product of the same... much in the same way as a spark owes its existence to the flame that gives it birth. When the fire dies, so does its heat.

But true self-possession is impossible upon such a path. Each of the images that he clings to -- as he pursues their gilded promise of helping him to reach his goal of feeling whole -- only secretly serves to separate him from himself at the outset of his quest.

To be able to see — to be aware of - what our mind is actually looking at, experiencing, and responding to…is the first step in the process of awakening; it not only strengthens our wish to attend to the present moment, but to remember that any time our mind is unattended…it slumbers in fitful dreams, from which it cannot awaken itself.

Here's the real reason a "coward dies a thousand deaths." By law, any fear we refuse to face always returns... until we finally learn its essential lesson: resistance ensures repetition, so that whatever we try to go around will come back around again.

The greatest point of resistance, the moment of its greatest intensity, whether it's a rose just about to open, an aircraft just about to break the sound barrier, or whatever it may be, is always just prior to the moment of transformation or release.
