Classroom Talk: 10/05/2025 - If we know it’s impossible to put out a fire by feeding it more wood, how do we fail to see the futility of trying to quiet a mind already burning with thoughts…by adding still more thinking?

Guy Finley explains that there is a nature inside of us that wants nothing to do with spiritual work and inner transformation. We must consciously meet this part of ourselves that is not interested in doing what is right, and work to develop the right kind of spiritual toughness so that we can be present to ourselves in every moment, in spite of what it seems to cost.

Dwelling on any dark state is a form of negative fascination; fear, doubt, resentment, and worry are all part of an unconscious routine through which resistance continues to refresh itself, all the while draining its unwary host. So remember: real life never repeats itself... and neither should you.
Why do we limit the impression we have of any given moment? We never limit an impression when we're sitting in front of a nice plate of food. Can't get enough of that! We never limit the impression of the idea of some beautiful place to go where we're going to have a marvelous time. There's no limitation to the impression produced by imagination. We want it with every bit of our being!
Without resistance to its appearance... there is no negativity inherent in suffering; to realize the fact of this truth is the first step in proving (to yourself) that all forms of psychological pain are optional...
Any action we take initiated by resisting some unwanted moment ensures the continuation of an unconscious, deeply conflicted nature so asleep to itself that it can't tell the difference between struggling to escape a prison, and not walking into one in the first place.

Topics covered: The thinker can't escape its own thought. It is impossible. And yet we spend most of our lives trying to do just that; Two people arguing with each other each believe that they know what reality is. But there cannot be two different realities. There is only one reality; There are I's that are trained in the art of combat, and there are I's that are trained in the art of compromise. Each I is seamlessly handed off to another I. "If the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch."
Since life gives nothing to us in parts, then why should we receive it that way?...
Whether it's issues concerning health, relationships, or some other heartache... letting go is the central theme of this life; we can either agree with its great lesson and learn to release our resistance to unwanted moments... or cling and cry, and continue serving a suffering that changes nothing.
