Here is a great spiritual truth: The only time we ever "fail" at anything in our lives is when we walk away from some challenging moment before we've allowed it to teach us its lessons.
The fear of -- and unconscious resistance to seeing the depth and breadth of one's own weakness -- is not the same as realizing one's actual state of (spiritual) helplessness in that same moment.
The true spiritual path is not so much about changing the kind of works that we do, as it is about realizing the need to change for whom it is that we do them.
Knowledge alone, without awakening to the spiritual wisdom it represents, is like finding yourself on a cold night with all the wood in the world...and having no flame with which to light it.
