The basis of real life -- of existence itself -- is exchange; whatever appears or disappears is the momentary expression of this Law. This is why the only thing that we can keep -- that is authentically our own -- is the Divine part of us that not only sees and understands this truth, but that stands in a stillness relative to it, as does the timeless night sky to the stars it reveals as they wink in and out of existence.

Attend to the moment of exchange. Exchange the lower mechanical operation of ERI (Event, followed by Reaction, then Identification) for the higher work of ERA (Event, Reaction, Attention). In any kind of unwanted moment, gather your attention and see the reaction that comes up, along with the nature that identifies with an image of how everything should be. Remember that as goes our attention, so comes our experience. The development of attention is essential in the spiritual life. It is through our attention that a connection is made between the lower world and the higher world that is aware of the lower. That alignment allows for what is lower, incomplete and outwardly-directed to be exchanged in favor of a higher Will that brings the observer and observed together, making it impossible to blame anything outside of yourself for your experience of life.
