As we presently are, it is "natural" for us to be rushing, anxious, and to hate those who hate. But the anxious state is not the natural state for a person who wants a real life -- "Unless you are like a little child, you will not enter the kingdom of God."
Story: A man goes to a doctor. He says he is always on edge so the doctor runs some tests. He tells the man, "Here's why you are agitated: your level of trust is very low."
What do we trust in? Fear? Anger? Trust means reliance on something. We rely on self-wrecking states. The natural estate of a human being is faith. Thought is a cascading force that increases tension. We don't see that that is what we trust. Our tormenting nature tells us that our pain will end if we just get our "ducks lined up."
I don't suspect that the agitation is due to a broken trust.
There are two paths in life: the path of faith and the path of fear. In the path of fear, we trust in images. There is me and what must be. A person who lives by thinking doesn't see that the dynamic of "what I want and what I don't want" creates tension. True pleasure is faith where there is no tension. Faith without action is meaningless.
Story 2: At a retirement home an elderly man sees black creatures crawling out of the floor and down from the ceiling. When he calls an attendant, the creatures disappear. But one day, one of the man's friends says that he sees them, too. The friend said that when the creatures emerge, he knows that they are not his responsibility and that when they come into the sunlight, they disappear.
The black creatures are the past, regrets, pains. There are two worlds. One is the divided nature that produces pain. The other is active trust which is conscious of fear. Let yourself sit in the light. A dark state is mechanical and it will pass if you let it go. The darkness is not a problem unless you resist it. Tension and depression are indicators of misplaced trust. Know that thoughts are there and learn to let them go.
