There is a kind of curse on us. It is the sense of isolation that goes with us wherever we go. It has nothing to do with what is around us but because we are cut off from the best of what is inside of us. How can we start to live from the best part of ourselves?
There were two brothers tormenting their younger brother until they noticed their mother watching them. The fear of what their mother would do to them provided them with conscience because of potential reprisal. Their conscience was based on their conditioning not on doing right because it was the right thing to do.
The story of the Good Samaritan in Luke: The priest went on one side of the beaten man and the Levite went on the other side. The priest represents the heart, everything sacred and the Levite represents the law, the intellect. The heart and mind represent the opposites, which have no conscience. The Good Samaritan represents the story of conscience, the coming together of the heart and mind in a human being.
A reporter traveled the country in search of the great American Character and heard about Willie the One Handed to Be who was never too busy to give someone an encouraging word. She noticed he only used one hand for everything he did even though he had two. She asked him about himself and where he got his name. He said, left to myself I always got into trouble so one day I decided I would use only one hand to the best of my ability so that I could keep my other hand in God's hand. Then when I went to do something bad I would remember whose hand I was connected to and that would make all the difference. With the one hand I do with the other hand I am.
We do not have conscience but we do have a still small voice. How do we develop conscience? Now, we only have time for me we serve only ourselves. But if our hand is in God's, our wish to remember ourselves we can no longer go along with our unconscionable nature. To remember God and myself I can no long be shaking my fist at someone. Awareness of what is whole precludes acting from the divided nature. We have been born into a planet where conscience has been stamped out. The best of you is in God's hands and he will give you everything you need to do. Now you have the choice of what to develop inside of yourself.
