Whenever you find yourself in the grip of some mental or emotional suffering, your first action must be -- assuming your wish is to be free -- to remember this one, all-important spiritual fact: no dark state can enter into your heart or mind, let alone remain there, without first having deceived you into welcoming it in, and then convincing you to take its side as it "proves" to you... that you've really no choice other than to live with its punishing presence.

Find out your favorite forms of useless suffering and work to see the breeding ground out of which the suffering comes. Ask yourself, "Who is my partner in this pain?" You will see that a negative state always comes with something that justifies and sustains it. Then the next time you detect the pain, instead of resisting it by blaming others or finding a way to avoid it, work to "eat your suffering." Bring it more wholly into your awareness so it can be married with your new understanding about it. Your conscious, intentional agreement to suffer that nature brings the worlds together within you, providing a certain kind of nutrition for your soul.
