At every new and possible crossing into a higher level of consciousness, standing at the gate of each of these spiritual kingdoms, there is a faultless, infallible celestial guard. His authority is absolute, as it is backed by nothing less than the Balance of All There Is. His one timeless task is to assess, and then to ensure that any soul who wishes to pass through his gate -- who comes seeking entrance into the next higher level of being -- has first paid, in full, his or her debt to the lower level of life they now wish to leave behind them.

Exercise
Accept the experience and make the payment. Learn to watch and stay with the moment of impact when something disturbs you. That moment has come to show you where you are out of balance, running in debt, and a payment is due. To accept the experience doesn't mean to think about it. Watch how your mind works frantically to bring balance by defining, explaining, and reacting to the impression. This activity can only provide a temporary fix at best, which ensures that the same experience will come around again. In order for real change to take place, you must agree to accept the pure experience. Change takes place through seeing it is something in you -- not the outside event -- that is the source of the disturbance you feel. The whole world may reject the moment of impact, but you can learn to see a painful experience as an invitation to change from another level of being. You will know you've paid the debt when you don't have that experience anymore.
