Recognizing Discernment vs. Suspicion

Question:

You have pointed out that suspicion gives us a false sense of self-righteousness. Yet, with this understanding, I still often find myself questioning the motives behind the behaviors of people I meet on a daily basis. What's the root of that dark state? What is it I'm missing here? (From student correspondence)

Answer:

First: When you meet a bear in the woods, you naturally take precautions because you know the nature of the bear... and that being careful is always wise. One is not negative about the bear or its actions. So, if my questioning of the motive of another has any negativity in it, there's a lesson there to be learned. Now, when you meet someone, there is always a "first read"... and it's fairly true as a rule (unless one is paranoid, or otherwise psychologically imbalanced). So, the "questioning" of the motives of others means I am either in wrong relationship with that person -- else I wouldn't have anything to do with someone I inherently distrust -- or, some part of me is actively judging their manifestations in the unconscious attempt to hide the same quality or characteristic in myself.
