Freedom is not something you find by fleeing from a negative state into the waiting arms of some better time to come. Real freedom is seeing that the whole idea of a "better time to come" can't exist without the unhappy nature that needs to imagine it... and then dare to drop both that tormented level of self -- and the time it lives in -- right on the spot.

Exercise
When an "I-ling" starts to turn into an "I-fling" by drawing you into its fling with negativity, work to step out of the passive role and into a properly active role so that a new, higher will can be expressed. Begin by seeing "it" -- the state itself -- for what it is, as something that's trying to draw you into its world. You can't give up anything that you think is you. "Real I" cannot be separated from the negative state until you start to recognize the difference between the two. As long as you think the pain belongs to you, you will inadvertently keep it in place by giving it your attention. As an additional exercise for deeper study, as soon as you sense an I-fling taking place, go look in a mirror. Look directly at the negative state as it's being expressed through you -- see it for what it is and learn to say, "No Thanks!" This is the beginning of truly knowing "I am not 'it'."
