Given my personal circumstances, I'm not able to understand how your statement, "it's very hard work to make something (so big) out of what really amounts to nothing," fits for me. Untimely death and other hardships that have impacted my family have resulted in much pain... not to mention the unbelievable hurt of being punished for someone else's actions. How does all of that "really amount to nothing"?
Answer:
Your situation is a difficult one, no doubt; but it's obvious you aren't going to change the minds of those trying to make you miserable. So what's left? You can either choose to let parts of you have their way with you -- by punishing you with all the thoughts about what may or may not happen... or, you can begin to act toward these same thoughts in a new way. This starts by seeing that without you consenting to listen to their repetitious painful story -- being caught in that continuous dark dialogue that your own thoughts engage you in -- neither these thoughts, nor the desperate condition they describe really have any power over you to make you suffer. Again, I'm not saying your situation isn't hard... it is. But, and in other words, these tormenting thoughts and feelings amount only to what we make of them... and we can learn to make them amount to nothing, even as we take the practical steps we must given whatever our personal situation demands.
