The reason he's able to be present, quietly aware of and attentive to the movement of his own thoughts and feelings, is because he's not trying to go somewhere, get something, or become someone "special." He is without tension because he sees that identifying with whatever the flavor of desire may be in the moment is the same as allowing fear to pull him apart.

Catch Useless Tension. Work to hear an alarm bell go off when you feel any form of tension. Put your attention on the tension and use it as a light to see you have become identified with an opposite. Watch tension throw you into a flame when, for example: you have a meeting set with someone and they are late or you are stuck in traffic and people aren't letting you get where you're going. Realize that the fire is fueled by unconscious expectation, the feeling that "this isn't supposed to happen." Remember that when you are tense, life has challenged an expectation you have and the pain that hides in expectation isn't known until the expectation is challenged. Become watchful of tension; dare to become free of this false guide and be reborn into a different human being.
