We are not lifted by our emotions...rather, we are chained to them. When we are not aware, we take our emotions to be ourselves, and it's impossible to understand anything we identify with.
Work to remember that you are the sky through which the clouds move. See the emotion - don't be it. Work to give your attention to the moment between the reaction and the response. Be aware of the emotion; don't identify with it. Our work is not to get rid of the clouds, but to be able to see the relationship between the sky and the clouds.
