By seeing that you are involuntarily entering into it. The moment isn't hell. I know it's stunning to consider, but I'll tell you it's true: God did not create hell. Human consciousness, in its fallen state, has created the illusion of separation -- the knowledge of good and evil -- and in that knowledge, judgment; and in that judgment, further separation; and in further separation, there is more and more distance in between yourself and what is eternal and loving. So that without knowing it (which is what this Work is about) I gradually want to know, I want to see, I want to understand. But my understanding can't be me pursuing a choice that what is ignorant has made.
The choice is to recognize that there may be suffering. I'm not going to escape suffering -- it's impossible. But I have a choice if I can start to see that the only time I start to live in that hell is when my mind brings my attention to the thing I don't want. Then the more I have that reaction to what I don't want, the more my attention is on the hell of it. And my attention connects me to the hell of a consciousness that's dedicated to keeping me from seeing I'm only experiencing this because there's something about it that attracts me.
Nobody believes they're attracted to hell! Do you believe you're attracted to hell? Of course not! That's where the rubber meets the road. That's the difference between a true teaching and all the rest of the nonsense out there.
I start to see there is something in this hell that just fascinates the hell out of me. I'm drawn into this darkness to figure out how to not be in the darkness I'm drawn into. Now, do I need a choice if I see that, or is the choice in the actual illumination of the consciousness that's a captive of what it gives itself to?
God loves fighters. Have no authority. Who is the authority in your life other than the moment where the disturbance drags you into the story that it has written so that you can be a captive of the very thing that you're reading and taking to be yourself? Catch it. Use the next 24 hours (don't make a big deal out of this) to say to yourself, "I, of my will, insist (as best I'm capable) upon this intention: I will not revisit my parents; I will not revisit my children; in fact, I will not revisit anything at all that brings up some kind of suffering in me, demanding that I find another path to resolve that pain. I won't do it." And if you do that, what do you think is going to happen? I'm going to see that there's something in me that can't wait to get in there and mix it up! OMG. Now what do I do? Let me be choiceless so that I can be conscious.
Higher awareness is choicelessness. And the reason that higher awareness is choicelessness is because higher awareness, inseparable from conscience, will not act against itself.
