The inequities of this world are beyond measure and, in fact, beyond repair. Human consciousness has fallen to new lows, in many ways -- its continuing descent masked only by the forms it assumes as it (evil) evolves the way it expresses itself in the world. If the people we see at fault around us knew better, they would do better; what we see in the way they treat animals is a reflection of their interior level. In many ways, it's animals abusing animals... the only difference is that a dog or a cat would know better than to abuse a human simply because they wanted to own one. As for the rest, think of the way Christ was treated by those he lived to lift above their low dark nature. And yet, it's exactly because of the horrible abuse that he agreed to endure (for the sake of love, for the Divine) that a few of us have been led to agree to suffer this darkness... that through this unthinkable act the Light within could be born and glorified accordingly. When you see suffering -- of any kind -- use it to remember your soul's wish that your task, in that moment, is to end the unconscious interior abuse that takes place in the darkness of yourself.
