Fear and anxiety do not exist outside of an old mind that -- moment by moment -- creates these dark states in a deeply divided space within itself.

Classroom Talk: 10/13/2002 - Whatever those things may be that he is driven to possess, regardless of the noble names he gives to them, he seeks these things only in the attempt to possess himself. But true self-possession is impossible upon such a path. Each of the images that he clings to -- as he pursues their gilded promise of helping him to reach his goal of feeling whole -- only secretly serves to separate him from himself at the outset of his quest.

The real source of the discontentment we feel in life is with our present level of understanding -- and not with what that understanding has brought to us. Life is not a series of conditions, but a manifestation of mind in Mind; our actual experience -- moment to moment -- is a question of consciousness, not circumstance.

Nothing is wrong with desiring financial independence, but this kind of freedom isn't what you really want. What you really want is freedom from a self that torments you each time it compares itself to others it imagines are happier than you are because of what they possess. Only the mind emptied of its painful need to seek something outside of itself finds lasting peace.

Before you can hope to attend to anything higher than the passing powers, pleasures, and pains of this earth, an awareness of the heavens must be awakened within you; these kingdoms, and all of their new possibilities are already in (your) Presence, but both go virtually unseen due to a certain kind of blindness produced by the constant press of unconscious desire.

As long as we willingly jump on board that dark train of thoughts and feelings called our discontentment, desperately trying to reach the end of the line where we hope happiness awaits us we will never discover that all such discontentment is a lie and that its desire to find fulfillment outside of ones own heart is a part of that lie.

The pain and stress of uncertainty persists in us not because uncertainty is some mandatory Reality but because there are parts of us that fear -- and therefore resist -- having an unknown future. Our "solution" is to unconsciously imagine a desirable secure time to come... an image whose unseen mirrored opposite is (by law) the uncertain self whose painful desires drive this dark cycle.
