If our contentment -- our joy in life -- doesn’t start somewhere deep and untouchable within us, as does the beauty of a rose begin before it flowers, then our happiness is “in and of this world”: (it is) a creation of passing time that will -- as must all things that live in time -- wilt and wither away.
Authentic joy can't be separated from a deep and silent sense of gratitude inseparable from a mind at peace with itself; it knows, without taking thought, that everything is forever in its right place -- being revealed at the right time -- even in those unwanted moments when temporarily conflicted parts of us would have us believe otherwise.
Whoever doesn't know himself, suffers unwillingly for the sake of ignorance. Whoever works to know himself, agrees to suffer for the sake of Wisdom. Whoever becomes Wise, slays the suffering born of ignorance. And whoever transcends the suffering born of ignorance shares in the birth and burden of creation, in which can be found no greater peace or joy.
In this short talk, Guy Finley talks about how the seeming "absence" of the divine is actually an invitation for us to draw inwardly nearer to that which never stops calling us.
It is an extraordinary thing -- this engaging feeling that comes with simply remembering you -- even though I have no idea where you are. How is it possible to feel such an abiding tenderness for what I am unable to see? Let alone touch or possess? And yet! On mornings like today with such soft winter sunlight gliding through the bared branches and the air so cool and undisturbed, I'm moved...
Part 1 You can no more separate a painful pattern in your life from the unseen part of yourself responsible for its return... than you can blame your face for the unhappiness you see upon it while looking in the mirror. "Simon" is a symbol; it isn't some one distinct character any more than joy has one face. "Simon" represents a relationship between different levels of consciousness in the midst of their constant communication. Our trouble is that we mechanically identify with parts of this "dialogue" and say "I" to something that is not who we are. This is why by working to observe ourselves -- by bein...
If knowledge alone were enough to fill the empty heart, then all of the ideas with which we have filled ourselves -- about happiness, love, and contentment -- would have long ago brought an end to our seeking. See the ocean: it does not run after its own waves, as it knows they must return to rest in her depths. And so it is for us: whether we speak of joy, peace, strength, or love itself --...
Instead of being the source of our daily sorrow, the fact that everything in life passes ought to prove itself a part of our ongoing joy. For hidden in the deep of this ceaselessly changing river of Life runs the power of this self-healing discovery: whenever we stumble over some unwanted remains of the day, it is we who have stepped outside the flow of Real Life, and our pain is the price...

In this video clip Guy addresses the following question that was submitted by an online viewer: "I watched negative states telling me to react to this and that. I stood there. Then I was driving to work and I didn't stand there. They surrounded my mind. I felt consumed by I's. Is being overwhelmed a trick of the mind?"
