Part 1

Most of us live an accidental life... where our actual condition is constantly covered up by the convenience of being able to regret whatever we look back on as the source of our pain. But let’s be clear. Our list of painful regrets is not due to a cruel world, bad timing, or unfortunate events that got the better of us; no, the fault lies elsewhere, much closer to home: not only are we blind to the legion of unconscious parts at large in the dark of us, but we are yet to see the other half of this same truth: these same parts never stop working to ensure that we never stop wrestling with the regrets they keep resurrecting within us. To what end, this painful plot?

That we never become conscious of the relationship between a life we regret, and our identification with a lower level of consciousness that ensures its continuation.

Part 2

It’s impossible to regret any unwanted moment in our past, let alone repeatedly incarnate its pain, without having agreed -- in one way or another -- to revisit the same sense of self whose experience we claim to regret, and yet we continue to relive.

Part 3

If regret is the act of a divided nature that keeps itself in place by regretting itself, then remorse is pain that nullifies this false sense of self. And that is why remorse is so rare -- and why it is so holy. It is written: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, those who mourn for the sake of righteousness…”

Have you ever talked yourself into a dark place -- or watched someone else do it -- by identifying with a negative reaction that wouldn’t be there at all if it wasn’t being fueled by the fear of some pain as imagined coming?

Part 1

Given time, whatever degree of dependency we help to create in others will eventually prove itself a prison of our own making... For there is no form of psychological dependency that doesn't make a captive of whoever may be involved in that relationship... including the one who unknowingly initiated it.

Part 2

The Divine first intervenes in our unseen identification with useless suffering by the dawning of an interior Light that reveals a shocking truth: most of the familiar solutions we depend on to free us from our suffering... are secretly complicit in its continuation.

Part 3

Part of our unseen collusion with any co-dependent relationship is the strong sense of urgency we feel whenever something seems to threaten it. And, not coincidentally, identifying with that fear is perhaps our greatest weakness.

Resistance to any unwanted moment fixes, at once, an unwelcome sense of self that then feels stuck in the negativity it struggles to escape. Liberation from this sorrow begins as we awaken to realize a shocking truth: there is no psychological suffering that isn’t rooted in some form of unconscious identification with a fixed image of ourselves... suddenly fearful of being washed away in the ever-changing flow of Real Life.

Never fear the loss of what will, and must disappear in this world of passing time. The work of remembering this timeless, but largely troubling celestial law, is the same as connecting yourself to a higher level of consciousness whose sheltering awareness never dies.

There is only one path that leads to a relationship with what is holy, and therefore to a Life (that is) already complete, and that is to see without flinching -- and finally without regret -- the following truth. All of the eye-catching paths we first imagine, and then rush to take -- seeing them as leading us to a peace ever just out of reach -- always end right where they began: in a too-familiar sense of emptiness that then imagines, once again, what’s needed to fulfill its endless desire to make itself whole.

Sometimes the touch of Grace is light; at other times, it can feel heavy, if not impossible to bear; yet its measured weight is always just right for those who are willing to wait, quietly, to realize the truths revealed (about themselves) with each Divine touch.

There is no greater strength than knowing that everything life brings to you is for you as well. And as this wondrous fact grows clear to you, old enemies either vanish or they're transformed into your allies. Precious energies once wasted in futile self-defense are turned into new powers for further self-exploration.

Part 2

If we refuse to see what life is trying to reveal to us about ourselves, then we can't learn. If we don’t uncover the truth of our own nature, then higher self-knowledge becomes impossible. And without awakening this new order of self-knowledge, there is no way to illuminate, let alone eliminate the fears that live in the shadows of a mind that still lives in the dark.

Two angels were working together in Heaven’s kitchen, each preparing a special loaf of bread that -- when all said and done -- was destined to become part of the Bread of Life.

As such, when came the right time, their light-giving nourishment would be shared with some spiritually receptive human being... that he or she might one day join them, and work with them in the angelic realm. Thus it was, is, and always will be, as ordained by the will of the Divine.

And when both loaves of bread were prepared, as ordained, the angels carefully placed them into the oven. But after they had been in there for a while... one of them started complaining saying to the other, “I have to get out of here... I can’t stand the heat."

A moment passed, and the other loaf of bread responded, in soft, but very firm tones:

“Of course it’s up to you... but if you leave the oven now you’ll be half-baked... at best!

Here's a great secret: anytime you feel like you "can't" go through something -- do what you want to -- or maybe just handle whatever needs to be done, remember the following: This painful sense of "I can't" -- including the legion of heavy thoughts that seem to anchor you to it -- is NOT you. Who YOU are -- your true Self -- can't be held back or weighed down by any form of unconscious resistance, any more than you can tie chains around a beam of light. But the ONLY way to realize this higher self-knowledge is to act on it... when nothing in you wants to try! There is no Truth that sets you free without your conscious work to see it in action.

Hidden within the opposing forces is a Light that, once realized, releases one from the bondage born of struggling with only one side or the other. Understood properly, all opposing forces contain and create their own gateway, but only when one stands before -- and within them -- long enough, consciously enough, to see it open.

Part 2

We live within a lower level of consciousness that does not want to be brought into the light of higher self-awareness that "appears" in each moment we're willing to see ourselves as we are. By its nature, this level of "self" lives in the dark of us, and resists any form of illumination. Fortunately, by grace, we are created to see what it can't, and by remaining in that Light be set free.

There may come a time when it feels as though love has abandoned us... Or, that it is so far above us as to be out of reach; nevertheless, of this you may be assured: love is always with us; it never leaves us: it can't... Any more than a heartbeat can live apart from the heart that sounds it out. Which means the love we hope to find -- to know, keep or to grow -- as the case may be -- is not somewhere "out there." The love we hope to find dwells within us, waiting for us to awaken to -- and then embrace -- its eternal, ceaseless presence.

Frantic, false emotions can't exist outside the company of the compulsive thoughts that are their life-long "partner-in-pain"... while higher emotion requires no thought at all to be real, to reveal its timeless intrinsic beauty.

Part 2

Until we can see our life... as a whole, we know it only through a single, but constantly shifting "I" within us. This lower level of self mistakes each experience as being the whole of our existence because -- for the duration of its little life -- each "I" imagines that it is the whole. In the confines of this fallen estate lies our sorrow, frustration, and the source of all useless suffering. This knowledge -- along with the higher awareness that gives birth to it -- is the gateway to true self-wholeness.

As the chaff is gradually threshed from the wheat... It's not hard to imagine that the wheat may "feel" as if it is losing itself: as if all that it has been -- or known -- is being taken from it. In much the same way, a sincere aspirant (who seeks unconditional Love) may feel as if his life is being stripped away by the light and action of a "Divine Miller"... Who first reveals, and then cleaves away the false from what is True in him. Which brings us to the point of this key lesson: neither the chaff, nor the false self has any real life of its own, and it's only through their deliberate estrangement that the kernel of Life that lives in both can realize its highest possibility: rebirth.
