Break the Familiar Pattern of Pain and Blame

Summary
As a race of beings, we have become completely complicit in the pain that visits us. A thought from the past pops up and punishes us. Someone says something we don't like, and we try to punish them and feel the pain of the blame that we place on them. There is an endless series of relationships with a part of our own nature that has convinced us that the pain is produced by a condition outside of us... and it never is. The conditions outside of us reveal the tendency we have to fall into the familiar old pattern of pain and blame.
Any time pain is talking to you about some past torment, you're listening to a lie. Not that the pain isn't true! It's an old axiom: "The feel is real, but the why is a lie." Your body has gone through the iteration so many times that when a painful thought comes up, it just naturally goes into the prescription: an event gives rise to the pattern of pain and blame, which leads to the prescription of punishing or changing who or what we blame.
You cannot change the conditions you see as responsible for your pain. Something happened to you five years ago, fifty years ago -- you can't change that condition. It's impossible! Something happened to you five minutes ago -- you can't change that condition. You can't change the pain itself in the moment the condition stirs it. Any struggle to change the condition that stirs in you is the old prescription. It doesn't work. You should know that. What does work is to begin to transcend the condition and the pain when it appears by understanding that the habitual resistance to the condition or the pain -- that resistance -- is the same as repeating the condition, and what you resist, persists.
The condition in the past -- we can't change that -- but we can change our relationship to it in the present moment when we recognize something in us has a fixed response to it. We have to actually see there's a part of us that always responds in the exact same way and then says it's the condition that won't change. It's not the condition that won't change! It's our relationship to it by an unchanging part of ourselves that needs things to remain the way they are so we can have that familiar sense of self every time that painful thought passes through our mind.
Nothing is fixed save for the pained parts of us that need to see the condition the way it does so it can continue itself. This means we must learn to never meet a pain in the same way we've met it before. The pain is the same old pain -- no question about it. It's the same old thoughts, the same old resistance producing the pain. But it is a fact that nothing in the universe is truly fixed. And therefore we can understand there is no moment that will ever come... including anytime a painful thought about the past passes through our mind... that isn't altogether new.
