I work with homeless youth and deal with learned helplessness on a daily basis. There seems to be a common feeling of being trapped in a cage of circumstance that is out of their control. Some feel that they would rather take what they get, instead of wanting what they'll never have.

My own mother is full of bitterness and negativity. I find myself distancing myself more and more from her, even though she is on her own and physically not well.
